چکیده

Pudgy roundworms storing a particular type of fat live longer than their more svelte counterparts, according to a study by researchers at the School of Medicine. This fatty buildup, and the subsequent increase in the worms’ life span, can be stimulated simply by feeding the animals monounsaturated fatty acids like those found in olive oil. Because many species share similar patterns of fat metabolism, it’s possible that the findings could extend to other animals, including humans, the researchers believe. The finding suggests that accumulating a specific type of fat can actually be beneficial. It came as a surprise to the researchers because severe caloric restriction has also been shown to extend the life span of many animals. “We have known for some time that metabolic changes can affect life span, but we expected the long-lived animals in our study would be thinner,” said Anne Brunet, PhD, professor of genetics. “Instead, they turned out to be fatter. This was quite a surprise.” Brunet, who is also an associate director of Stanford’s Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging, is the senior author of the study, which By Jennifer Yuan

Comparison of the effect of tranquility and mindfulness on emotional cognitive regulation and family function in consuming slow-moving substances after poisoning

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare of the effect of tranquility and mindfulness on emotional cognitive regulation and family function in consuming slow-moving substances after detoxification. Method: This quasi-experimental study was a pre-test and post-test with a control group and a three-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the study included man patients who were ref...

Cardiovascular and respiratory changes during slow-wave sleep in rats are associated with electrocorticogram desynchronization.

In awake rats a single recurrent larger tidal volume (deep breaths) occurs at regular intervals, followed by oscillations in arterial pressure and heart rate. In the present study we recorded the changes in blood pressure, heart rate and ventilation during the wakefulness-sleep cycle identified by electrocorticographic records in order to determine whether the deep breaths and cardiovascular os...

Fatty acid desaturation and the regulation of adiposity in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Monounsaturated fatty acids are essential components of membrane and storage lipids. Their synthesis depends on the conversion of saturated fatty acids to unsaturated fatty acids by Delta9 desaturases. Caenorhabditis elegans has three Delta9 desaturases encoded by the genes fat-5, fat-6, and fat-7. We generated nematodes that display a range of altered fatty acid compositions by constructing do...

Respiratory effects on experimental heat pain and cardiac activity.

OBJECTIVE Slow deep breathing has been proposed as an effective method to decrease pain. However, experimental studies conducted to validate this claim have not been carried out. DESIGN We measured thermal pain threshold and tolerance scores from 20 healthy adults during five different conditions, namely, during natural breathing (baseline), slow deep breathing (6 breaths/minute), rapid breat...

The Importance of Nutrition Labeling and Health Claim Regulation on Product Choice: An Analysis of the Cooking Oils Market

The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) prohibits health claims for foods containing more than a certain amount of fat per serving. This disqualified level eliminates health claims for cooking oils since these products have approximately 14 grams of fat per serving, above the acceptable threshold. However, a number of scientific studies indicate that, from a heart-health perspective, co...
